New Zealand Snails Lay Eggs from Neck, Shock Scientists

Wellington, New Zealand - Get ready for the most bizarre news you've heard all day! Researchers in New Zealand were left scratching their heads when they witnessed a large carnivorous snail laying an egg...from its neck! It's like a tiny hen laid an egg from its snout.

The footage shows what looks like a tiny egg popping out of an opening below the head of the Powelliphanta augusta snail, a threatened species only found in New Zealand. Scientists were baffled and wondered if they had been smoking something illegal.

The video was taken at a facility on the South Island's West Coast, where conservation rangers have been caring for these snails in chilled containers since nearly two decades ago. It's like they're trying to create some kind of snail army or something.

The conditions in the containers mimic the alpine weather in their only former habitat, which must be pretty boring for the snails. I mean, who wants to live in a fridge?
